Description:
Hiram Monserrate had claimed to be a friend to the LGBTQ community up to the night of the Marriage Equality vote. He sought LGBT endorsements, donations, and had a gay chief of staff. However, due to political pressure, Monserrate voted “no.”
The group of activists, later to be named Queer Rising, decided to confront Monserrate. Ironically, a year prior to his annual holiday party, Monserrate was arrested for domestic abuse after slashing his girlfriend in the face with a broken beer bottle. 7 activists entered his holiday party and when the moment was right, began chanting “Hiram believes marriage is between one man, one woman and a broken bottle.” Only a few months later, Monserrate was ejected from the New York State Senate due to his conduct.
