Following on the heels of repeated suicides by LGBTQ youth, gay bashings in the Bronx and the Stonewall Inn and an anti-gay hate speech by Carl Paladino, Queer Rising organized the Times Square Love-In. The message was simple: hate speech is a direct cause of suicide and violence within the LGBTQ community. There is no distinction when it comes to love.
Participants (same-sex and straight) stood atop the ruby-red stairs in Times Square holding hands, hugging and kissing, holding signs and chanting messages of love.
