Description:
On October 19th, 2011, Queer Rising held an “art-installation” action in Union Square, amidst stormy weather, to highlight the lack of funding provided to LGBTQ homeless youth in New York.
With lips painted pale purple to emphasize the coming harsh New York winter, about 30 Queer Rising members and other activists stood silently by cardboard boxes that featured the names, ages and hobbies of anonymous LGBTQ youth. They also displayed a 26-foot blue banner that read: “3,800 of our Youth are Homeless – 40% are Queer. Winter is Coming! Rally 10/24, Union Sq, 6pm.”
As one of the lead sponsors of the upcoming “Rally for Homeless LGBT Youth,”—along with The Ali Forney Center and many other NY organizations—Queer Rising demands an additional $3 million in funding for the creation of 100 youth shelter beds per year, until no runaway or homeless young person in NYC is forced to sleep on the streets due to lack of available shelter beds.
