In December 2009, New York State Senate voted overwhelming against Marriage Equality. This vote reignited a fight in the LGBTQ community. A group of queer and straight ally activists (and soon to be activists) met in a room on the third floor of the LGBT Center in Manhattan one Sunday night. Some were angry, some were sad, some were tired –but all were ready to fight back. With the help of some veteran ActUp activists, this group decided that night to take action. And thus, Queer Rising was formed!
